V-Weight

To make the standard V-weight you need some kind of mold. Ideas which will work:

  • Use some plywood to make a 90 degree mold. Cap the ends with more plywood. The wood will singe slightly but will not burn. If you make a good fit you can trim off the excess later on. If you have lots of gaps you can plug them up with electrical tape or putty
  • Make a sand mold out of aluminum foil and sand. Just form the foil into the desired shape and push it into a box of sand.
  • Cut an 8" iron pipe in half and weld the two together to form an M shape. This one would be good if you are going to make a boat load of weights or happen to be a pipefitter.
  • Find a piece of 4" angle iron. Not as form-fitting as the pipe solution above but then you don't have to be a pipe fitter, just a junkyard denizen.

Being a junkyard type myself, I happened to have a piece of aluminum square channel. I used a couple of scrap pieces of plywood and some putty to make the end caps:

I think that you are getting the drift by now that this mold stuff is not rocket science. Lead melts at low temperatures and solidifies very quickly, so you don't need a milspec titanium mold to get the job done. Just some scrap you have laying around the garage.
